About Vastu Shastra

What is Vastu?

Vastu, often referred to as Vastu Shastra, is the science of designing buildings in accordance with the laws of nature. It is the study of effect of your space on your mind and life situations. By understanding the forces that shape your destiny and with the knowledge of how to use them you can shape your present and your future. The universe evolves in the form of 'five elements' from this birth-less, form-less supreme existence. These five elements are water, air, Fire, earth and space (jal, vayu, agni, prithvi and aakash).

Origins of Vastu

The Sanskrit word Vastu means a dwelling or house that also possesses a plot of land. Shastra is roughly translated as "science, doctrine, teaching". It is believed that Vastu or Vastu Shastra developed between the period 6,000 to 3,000 BC. Vastu principles were traditionally deployed in the construction of Hindu buildings, in particular temples.

Elements of Vastu

Vastu is based on the principle that five elements govern our world. As discussed above, these elements are earth, water, fire, air and space.

- Earth possesses geomagnetic energy
- Water has gravitational energy
- Fire provides solar energy
- Air generates wind energy
- Space provides cosmic radiation

Q: Is Vastu Shastra associated with any religion?

Vastu Shastra is a mystical science and comes from the Vedic tradition in India like yoga and meditation. Like these practices, the health enhancing, life-giving benefits of Vastu Shastra stand on their own.

Q: Why practice Vastu?

If the five elements are balanced and all obstructions to life-supporting energy are removed you will receive the maximum life enhancing energy and support of nature, which will assist you in unfolding your full potential. You will have more opportunities and your thinking will be clear to act on them in the proper time.

Q: When should we practice Vastu?

It is best to practice Vastu when purchasing or renting an office, house, apartment or lot and when designing a home. You can also use Vastu for any existing structure or when you are facing problems at home or work.

Q: What is the difference between Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui?

They both aim at removing obstructions so that energy can flow freely, which creates environmental harmony. The primary difference is that part of Feng Shui's theory is based on a regional concern that sandstorms, blowing from the north, made a northern entrance to the home unacceptable, whereas Vastu favours entrances on the north and east. Vastu is based on science. Feng Shui is based on local geographic considerations and traditions. They both utilize the five elements however, Vastu uses earth, water, fire, air and space; whereas Feng Shui replaces earth and space with wood and metal. We have found Vastu Shastra to be more effective for our personal use and for the benefit of our clients.

Q: When will I notice the benefits of Vastu?

When the elements are balanced in your environment, opportunities will come. It is up to you to utilize these opportunities. You may notice some improvements right away; others may take couple of months.

Q: What are the basic principles of Vastu Shastra?

Everything that exists in the universe, including our bodies, is made of five elements. These five elements are earth (geomagnetic energy), water (gravitational energy), fire (solar energy), air (wind energy) and space (cosmic radiation). These forces have a powerful influence on us, as well as the environment. Vastu is the science of arranging our man-made environments so that we are in alignment with these forces of nature. If we are not aligned with solar and geomagnetic forces we may experience illness, misfortune and struggle. It is as if we are attempting to swim against the current of a river.

The east is the source of solar, ultra-violet rays, and the north is the source of magnetic energy. We benefit by keeping our environment open to these life supporting energies. The harmful infrared rays, which come from the south, and the destructive gamma rays, coming from the west, cause disruption within the environment and our bodies. Using the principles of Vastu Shastra, we protect ourselves from these rays.

Each of these elements is associated with a particular direction: water in the northeast, fire in the southeast, earth in the southwest, air in the northwest and space in the centre. By balancing these elements in their proper proportions, we will gain the benefits of health, happiness and prosperity.

Q: Are the principles of Vastu applicable in different geographical areas around the world?

Even where there is a limited amount of sunshine, the answer is yes. The basic principles of balancing the five elements apply throughout the world. By using the principles of this science, buildings can be designed to harmonize with the different climatic conditions of each region.

Q: Can the ills of society (poverty, crime, sickness) be blamed on unbalanced environment and surroundings?

No doubt. The ills of society are worse in congested cities that lack natural light and fresh air. About 80% of the negative influences in our lives are generated by an imbalanced home and work environments.

Q: Is it possible to achieve perfect balance?

It is very difficult to achieve perfect balance; however, it is said that if your merits are more than your demerits, you have achieved good Vastu.

Q: Can I benefit from using Vastu Shastra without demolishing my home and starting over?

Yes, there are a few very easy adjustments you can make. You can sleep in the southwest area of your house with your head to the south. You can place heavier furniture to the south and west. Keep the center, north and east areas of your home open and free of clutter. You can also place a fountain in the northeast and a light in the southeast. Just using these basic suggestions can have positive benefits in your life.

Q: What is the scientific basis for having a lot slope down to the north and the east?

A lower level in the northeast allows the positive magnetic energy coming from the north and the positive solar energy (ultraviolet rays) coming from the east to enter your property and house. This downward slope to the northeast allows water to flow there and absorb the positive energies. Then this positive magnetic energy can flow unobstructed to the southwest where it is deposited. The higher level in the south and west protects you from harmful gamma and infrared rays.

Q: Could you suggest me Vastu tips for the interior of my home?

For safe and sound interior planning of your house make sure that there is plenty of light, air with proper ventilation and minimum furniture. Bedroom: The master bedrooms should be in the South West corner of the house. If the house has more than one floor then, then it should be on the top most floor. The ceiling should be in level, this makes the energy of the room uniform, which in turn gives one a steady state of mind. Children's room should be in the north west or west side. To have a better concentration they should have a separate study close to their bedrooms.

Q: Does Vastu Shastra promise prosperity?

No, not really. Vastu Shastra cannot be directly linked with prosperity. It only suggests ways in which we can live in tune with the laws of nature, so that we can be healthy and peaceful and work efficiently. The ancient texts of Vastu Shastra have probably claimed to bring prosperity, as an indirect consequence or being able to perform well at home and work.

Q: Which deity is worshiped in Vastu Shastra?

Religious icons have no place in science. The ancient text of Vastu Shastra did mention various Gods from Hindu mythology fixing their locations on the site and prescribing the offerings to be made to them, but that also seems to have been a ploy created by ancient scientists to convince the people to accept the Vastu norms.

Q: What is the significance of the Vastu Purusha?

The 'Vastu Purusha' is said to be the spirit of the site. It's in the form of a human male and lies on the site with his head towards the east, his posture fitting exactly in a square. It was easier to get the anthropometrically and aesthetically correct dimensions of rooms, doors windows and even the structural members like plinth and pillars. Even the interior planning was governed by the posture of the 'Vastu Purusha' and the norms which specified where and how the structure must be built, so that it does not injure him.

Q: Vastu Shastra is so superstitious, how can it be called a science?

Vastu Shastra is a science. In the age when it was formulated, the society was largely illiterate, the illiteracy generating a fear of the unknown. Science was beyond the realm of their understanding while religion was omnipresent. It was therefore simpler for the ancient Vastu experts to spread the concepts of the Vastu Shastra through the intricate network of religion and superstition. Unfortunately, as time passed, only the superstitious filtered down the generations, while the actual theory eluded the world.

Q: How does Vastu Shastra work in apartment blocks?

It is a fact that the original Vastu tenets prescribed the type of site and then specified the layout materials and construction techniques. In an urban milieu, one can hardly indulge in choosing dwelling sites. Thus, the macrolevel implications can be successfully adapted to contemporary needs.

Q: How can Vastu Shastra be applied to the commercial and industrial premises?

The original texts of Vastu Shastra were confined to the architecture of temples, places and homes of the commoners. However, those very norms can be easily applied to other structures such as offices and industries. So if, facing a particular direction brings in negative solar energy, the large machinery may be kept there to block it.

Q: What if it is not possible to implement all the changes recommended by a Vastu consultant?

It must first be noted that Vastu Shastra is not a religion. However, God fearing you may be, you should not feel threatened by Vastu Shastra, because it is a science. Science does not condemn God, or disprove its identity but it does not accept it. Vastu Shastra is the science of structure, formulated to help us live in tune with nature. It does not give solutions to your domestic or financial problems.

Vastu consultant assesses your home or work place, and suggests changes that will improve its Vastu compliance. If the assessment has been done in a systematic manner, it is obvious that implementing the more negative elements should yield substantially positive effects. Very often, merely changing the orientation of the interior fixture helps in achieving a Vastu-positive environment.

Q: Why directions are important in Vastu Shastra?

The Sun, as our ancestors revealed, is the only source of light and heat for human and other living beings. It directs and sustains life on earth. Therefore, the Sun, the rising Sun is like God, and its direction of rising is considered pious and is taken as a point of reference. If we face the rising sun, the facing direction is called East, behind us shall be West, our left hand denotes North direction and right hand denotes South direction. Therefore, the effect of the direction effects the building/house constructed therein.
